Voices from the Past

Every family, every little town, every crossroads cemetery has its stories—some tragic, some triumphant, some simply mysterious. Here we share the true tales that shaped our kin and community: the court cases, tragedies, scandals, heroics, and unforgettable events passed down through newspaper clippings, family memory, and the old courthouse books.

If you have a story to share, or a memory that should be preserved, please contact Rebecca at rebeccastreasures1@gmail.com.

Featured Story: The Trial of Boyd Spencer (1921–1925)

When young Vernon Bryant was shot and killed after a church service in Powell County, it set off one of the most dramatic criminal trials ever witnessed in these parts. Boyd Spencer, kin to the Rogers family by marriage, stood trial twice in Clark County—first ending in a hung jury, then in a conviction for voluntary manslaughter. His story wove through courtrooms, prison cells, and finally back home, where illness ended his days.
This story is told in full, with court records, clippings, and obituary, in our very first “Voices from the Past” feature.
